Block volumes are persistent disks for your instances.
They work like an external drive. You attach a volume to one instance. You mount it in the OS. You detach it later and reuse it.
Volumes are regional. Your instance and volume must be in the same location.
A volume can be attached to one instance at a time.
Detach or shut down before cloning or moving volumes.
Resizing in the console may require filesystem expansion inside the OS.
